An Artist With Many Facets
Endowed with a rich heritage of music, Pt. Rajaram ( Raja) Kale has developed it further into a class of his own. Initiated by his father Prabhakarrao Kale, he received initial training from Pt. Uttamrao Agnihotri. Later on, he was under the able tutelage of the legendary Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, a veteran vocalist and a great composer of classical and semi-classical forms. He also received valuable guidance from Pt. C. P. Rele and Pt. Balasaheb Poonchwale of Gwalior Gharana.
Pt. Raja Kale is known as a senior disciple of the versatile Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, whose complex individualized style arose from a blend of various aspects of the Agra, Jaipur and Gwalior traditions. Apart from the obvious influence of his own Guru, Pt. Raja Kale, has made a studiously analytical and interpretive study of older and contemporary Hindustani composers like Great Pt. S.N. Ratanjankar "Sujaan", Pt. Ramashreya Jha "Ramrang", Pt. C.R. Vyas and others, all of whose compositions he renders in a manner true to his own imagination and personality while remaining faithful to their original content.
Pt. Raja Kale has carefully maintained an approach that is at once eclectic and focused on performance. His presentation of ragaas with the unique blend of aesthetics and technicalities is an enriching experience and hence, is his forte. With his appealing style and gifted voice with wide range and rare tonal qualities, Pt. Raja Kale achieves perfect articulation in the alaap, taan as well as the exposition of the Bandish. He is equally proficient in presenting Thumri, Tappa, Natyageet, Bhajan, and Bhavgeet.
Pt. Raja Kale acquired his Ph.D. in the year 1990 with the thesis 'Importance of Bandish in Khayal' with reference to artistic presentation of Bandish'. Recently, Pt. Raja Kale was awarded 'Senior Fellowship' from Department of Culture Government of India for the subject 'Comparative study and analysis of 'Gayaki of the Legendary singer. Pt. Bhimnsen Joshi, Pt. Kumar Gandharva, Pt. Jitendra Abhisheki, and Pt. Jasraj.
